The Toronto Blue Jays continue to add to their pitching depth. Last week, it was revealed that they had signed a 19 year old pitcher out of Venezuela named Deiker Pineda. On Tuesday, he was assigned to the DSL Blue Jays Red in the Dominican Summer League.
Pineda's signing echoes a recurring for the Blue Jays, who have used much of their international pool money on low-cost, low-risk pitching prospects out of South America and the Caribbean.
The youngster was recently featured at the Back To Back showcase at the JD Beisbol Academy in Palo Negro, which also happens to be Pineda's hometown.
Other recent signees from the showcase include Lionel Castillo, who inked a deal with the
Kansas City Royals; Steve Gutierrez, who signed with the
Tigers, and Brandon Rodriguez, who is now a member of the
New York Yankees.
Venezuela has always been a strong baseball nation, and their reputation has only increased in recent years. Two Blue Jays currently on the roster - second baseman Andres Gimenez, and outfielder/designated hitter Anthony Santander - both hail from the South American nation.
At 19, Pineda is several years away from even Triple-A. He'll start his professional journey in the Dominican Republic and if he performs well, he could see time in Rookie Ball with the FCL Blue Jays before too long.
Many International Free Agents never make it to the bigs, but at a cost of roughly $10K a pop, many teams are comfortable taking that sort of risk.
He'll be an interesting player to follow in the coming years.
