23-year-old Toronto Blue Jays fan Alex Di Domizio, had an encounter with Rogers Centre security on Monday regarding his 'Yankees Suck' flag.
Blue Jays fan Alex Di Domizio, encounter with Rogers Centre security was hardly in his thoughts when he made the trek down to the ballpark this week.
Heading down to see the Blue Jays take on the rival New York Yankees on Monday night, Di Domizio walked into the stadium with a «Yankees Suck» flag that he'd custom-made through a third party.
«I photoshopped the Jays logo onto the 'Yankees Suck' [background] that I found on Google, and then I got it printed on the flag,» he said in an interview with Offside. «I bought two of them at the same time.»
But before he even caught a single pitch of the game from his seats in the 200-level outfield located near Toronto's bullpen, Di Domizio found himself suddenly getting flagged down by stadium security after holding the flag up for «about 10 minutes.» writes Adam Laskaris of the Daily Hive.
First thing Di Domizio did afterward was post a picture of himself on twitter (X) holding the flag with a message directed at Gate 14 podcasters Avery Chenier and Johnny Giunta.
@AveryChenier @JohnnyGiunta_ there was an attempt. Flag was confiscated before the first inning 😂
Not the first time the Toronto Blue Jays have had to apologize for an ejection of a fan from Rogers Centre or a confiscation of an item
It wasn't described as an escalated interaction, though he admitted that he was unsure initially if he'd be tossed from the ballpark for the flag.
After a short conversation, Di Domizio says he was escorted over to a guest services desk, where he was told that he'd be able to pick the flag up following the game writes Laskaris.
«They kept saying 'Yankees Suck' was the problem. They didn't say anything about the Jays logo in the middle,» Di Domizio added. «I wasn't swearing on it or anything, like it just said the opposing team sucked, which is what we're there for. I didn't really think there was going to be a problem with it.»
The Blue Jays confirmed that Di Domizio's flag was allowed into the ballpark, and that the temporary confiscation wasn't up to company policy.
«After reviewing the situation, we made a mistake, and we have addressed the issue to ensure it does not happen again,» a Blue Jays spokesperson told Offside.
Despite a bit of confusion on his end, no boycott of the team is in order for Di Domizio according to Laskaris.
«I'm going again on Wednesday [against the Yankees] but I'm probably not going to bring the flag this time, because I don't want that to happen again,» he shared. «I hope I'm not blacklisted.»
I would certainly hope that the Blue Jays security staff would not black list a fan that went out of his way to make people laugh at his flag that honestly is pretty freaking awesome.
This isn't the first time Rogers Centre security has dropped the ball and later had to apologize to a Blue Jays fan, it probably won't be the last.
