45 games into the 2025 Major League Baseball season, and we have our first managerial change. The Pittsburgh Pirates have let go of Derek Shelton. Bench coach Don Kelly will take over as manager.
The Pirates currently a 12-26 record and sit in last place in the NL Central.
Shelton was named the 41st manager in Pirates on November 27, 2019, in time for the 2020 season. It was first managerial job. Prior to leading the Pirates, he a long, successful career as a coach, including a year spent with the
Blue Jays in 2017.
During Shelton's five years with the Pirates, Pittsburgh never finished higher than fourth in the division, with their best season coming in 2023, when they finished with a 76-86 record. They finished with an identical record in 2024, but were last in the division.
It's a recurring theme for the Pirates have been noted for their futility in recent decades. After a successful run in the 1970s, they sank into mediocrity in the 1980's, and posted a losing record for 20 consecutive seasons. They finally made it back to the playoffs in 2014 and 2015, but lost the wildcard game both times.
Shelton got his start as a minor league player for the
New York Yankees in the early 1990s, before an elbow injury ended his playing chances. He began coaching in the minors in 1997, managing in the Yankees system until 2002.
In 2005, he was working as a minor league hitting coach for Cleveland, when he replaced Hall of Hamer Eddie Murray on the major league team on an interim. After seven years with Tampa Bay as their hitting coach, he joined Toronto as their quality control coach for the 2017 season.
During his stint in Toronto, the team's vice president was Ben Cherington, who would ultimately become General Manager of the Pirates and the man who hired Shelton.
Shelton finishes his Pirates tenure with a record of 306-440, with a win percentage of .410.
