Believe it or not, we are now a quarter of the way through the 2025 Major League Baseball season. The Toronto Blue Jays sit at 21-21, grinding out a .500. record, while enduring injuries, and some very streaky play along the way. But just what is their report card like so far? According to some stats by insider Ben Nicholson-Smith, about league average.
While the Blue Jays started off strong, sitting seven games above .500 and in first place through the first ten games, a rough stretch saw them fall six games below the even mark, before a recent good run put them back in the middle. They have been a very streaky team. Now, Nicholson-Smith has provided some context.
According to the Blue Jays insider, they have a team wRC+ of 99, which ranks them 14th. While they be surprising given their perceived lack of power, they are 6th in the MLB in singles and ninth in doubles.
The numbers make sense. While the Jays have had a couple of big offensive games, they have relied on small ball and stringing together hits and often win by one or two runs. Three players - Anthony Santander, George Springer, and Daulton Varsho - are tied for the team lead in home runs with five. And while the power has come around more recently, the Blue Jays need to unlock it if they want to truly be a contending team.
That being said, there's something to be said for being an old-school hitting team. Most of the regulars have seen their batting averages rise recently, thanks to a more well-rounded, patient approach at the plate.
While the Blue Jays may never be the power hitters of 2021 again, they can succeed in 2025. They just have to be consistent.
