Lawrence has been here before; this is the fourth time already this season that the right-hander has been DFA'd. The first three came when he was member of the
Seattle Mariners. He passed through waivers the first two times, but the Blue Jays a claim on him last week.
While many believed that Lawrence's tenure would be short, it was also believed that it would last longer than one game. But after having to burn through him a double-header - in a game that saw
Kevin Gausman throw 53 pitches in a third inning - the Blue Jays had to make adjustments.
This was actually Lawrence's third stint as a Blue Jay, having pitched for them in 2017 and 2022.
In spite of all he has gone through this season, Lawrence can be a valuable asset for many teams in the exact type of role that he filled with both Toronto and Seattle.
At 37, he recently spoke about his current situation in self-aware terms, realizing that his career might be coming to an end. Now, he is simply trying to make the most of the situation that he is in.
With plenty of teams looking for back-end pitching help, Lawrence could easily latch onto a new team. He is out of options, so any deal he signs would have to be a minor league one that doesn't take space on a 40-man roster.
Who knows, maybe he'll find his way back to Seattle or Toronto.
