Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer speaks to the media following his second start of the season against the Cleveland Guardians.

Prior to the game between the Blue Jays and Guardians, Toronto manager John Schneider spoke about how happy he was to finally have a full five-man rotation for the first time since Max Scherzer left his inaugural Blue Jays start on March 29 after just three innings..
On Wednesday night, Schneider got to bask in the full extent of Scherzer's glory when the likely Hall of Famer tossed five innings in Toronto's eventual 5-4 loss in 10 innings at Progressive Field.
"There were so many positives to take out of that,» Schneider said. «I think going forward for us, that's a really, really good sign.»

High-fives all the way through the Blue Jays dugout for Max Scherzer as he comes off the field after five innings of three-run ball. Struck out four while allowing six hits and three walks on 83 pitches, his most in a start since throwing 85 last July 25.

«I was a little rusty,» Scherzer said. «I pitched good; I didn't pitch great.»

While Scherzer described himself as «a little rusty» and said «I pitched good, I didn't pitch great,» the physical side felt «very good,» leaving him thinking about «what I need to do, the checks I need to make,» to execute better the next time around.
That's a far cry from the tentative way he came out of his outings from spring training onwards, when the toll on his thumb was more front and centre than the performance itself.
«It's been frustrating as heck to be dealing with this for really the third straight year,» Scherzer said. «I finally get back out there, get pitching again, get that adrenaline boost, you can't judge yourself based on pitching without being in a major-league game. That's when you really judge yourself off how you execute. Today, you know, even though I had all that and we can talk about where the good is, that's where I need to get better.»

Scherzer's five-inning start marked his longest outing since he went six innings on July 25, 2024, while with the Rangers.
«From the physical side, today felt great,» Scherzer said. «It felt good to be out there and compete, and hold my velo throughout the game.»
