The Toronto Blue Jays have signed pitcher Wagner Soto. Upon his signing, he was promptly assigned to DSL Blue Jays 2 in the Dominican Summer League.
At 16, Soto is the youngest International Free Agent the Blue Jays have signed this season. While most IFAs are between 18-22, it is not unheard of for players to be signed at 16. In fact, it likely means that Soto has a more advanced skillset then some of his teammates.
Soto hails from the Dominican Republic, with his home province being Peravia.
Several notable baseball players have come the various municipalities in Peravia. The capital of Bani is home the Aybar brothers; Miguel & Ruben Tejada; Juan Uribe, and Jose Vizcaino.
Nizao, the second largest municipality is the hometown of O'Neil Cruz, Ketel Marte, and
Vladimir Guerrero Sr..
Soto was placed on the restricted list, which is common practice for new IFA signees. It is usually done while other formalities are being done like passports, visas, identity documents, and things of that nature.
Soto joins a long list of pitchers that have been signed recently by the parent club, including Bryan Bordon, Erinyel Marquez, Rodrigo Ramirez, and Manuel Suero.
Not much else is known about Soto, but he figures to stay in the Dominican Summer League for at least a few years while the Blue Jays gauge his overall talent.
A lot can change between the ages of 16-20, but Soto has a lot of promise. He will an interest prospect to watch in the coming years.
