Former Blue Jays outfielder to join Detroit Tigers coaching staff

Despite making it all the way to the ALDS, the Detroit Tigers are making some personnel changes.

Among the new coaches are Cody Asche and Anthony Sanders who both come over from the Baltimore Orioles. Asche, who served as Baltimore's hitting coach since 2023, slides into the assistant hitting coach position, while Sanders takes over as first base coach, the same role he had under former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde
In addition, the Tigers also announced that Billy Boyer has been promoted from the minor leagues and will serve as the team's quality control coach in 2026.

In addition to their time with Baltimore, both Asche and Sanders had brief careers as major league outfielders.
Asche spent four years with the Philadelphia Phillies and had a breakout season in 2015, when he 12 home runs and had 39 RBIs in 129 games. However, after struggling in 2016 he was Designated for Assignment and ended up finishing up his career with a 19 game stint with the Chicago White Sox.
Sanders time in the bigs was even more brief. He debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays all the way back in 1999, going 2-7 with a double and two RBIs over three games. He then ended up with the Seattle Mariners, for whom he appeared in 10 games. The rest of his time was spent in the minor leagues, although he did win a gold medal with the US National Olympic Team in 2000.

In addition to his time with the Orioles, Sanders spent many years as a minor league coach for the Colorado Rockies and has also managed in the Pioneer League.
The Tigers also made some changes at the front office and executive level as well. as they look improve upon last season's strong showing.
