TRADE: The Mariners have acquired right-hander Alex Hoppe from the Red Sox in exchange for Minor League catcher Luke Heyman. And to clear a 40-man roster spot for Hoppe, left-hander Tayler Saucedo has been designated for assignment.
Teams looking for left-handed middle relief may take a flyer on Saucedo
The Mariners claimed Saucedo after the Blue Jays designated him for assignment in 2023. He posted a 5.40 ERA in 28 1/3 innings over parts of two seasons in Toronto.
Saucedo served as a solid middle relief option for Seattle in each of the past two seasons with a 3.54 ERA and 3.79 FIP in 86 1/3 innings of work across 105 outings.
Saucedo has been inducing grounders at a 60.9% clip that even surpasses the rates of his teammates.
While his 21.3% strikeout rate is a little below average, he's getting swinging strikes on a strong 13.6% of his offerings.
Saucedo's strikeout and walk marks are far better against same-handed opponents. He has been adept at keeping the ball on the ground against hitters from either side of the dish.
Things have not gone well for the southpaw so far this year, however, with four runs allowed and more walks than strikeouts in his first three appearances.
A team looking for left-handed middle relief may be interested in his services.
