The All-Star performed well in his rehab stint with Triple-A Buffalo and has told manager John Schneider that he is ready to go. Just one problem... the Jays have too many players.
On a team with a surplus of outfielders, no one is deserving of a demotion
The most likely candidate to be sent to Triple-A would be Joey Loperfido, who, although he has already been undeservedly sent down once, is only hitting .214 in the month of September.
Davis Schneider is another candidate but he mashes righties and can also play 2nd as needed.
As Santander can play first in a pinch, Ty France could be the odd man out, but he's a solid back-up to Vladdy and a Gold glove candidate.
With Santander having poor defensive metrics, he likely gets replaced by a Nathan Lukesor Myles Straw in the later innings should he start in the OF.
George Springer, a more than capable outfielder, has seen the bulk of playing at DH since Santander's departure.
The Blue Jays will want a guy like Santander back for the post-season, but it will involve a bit of tetris.
Ultimately, these things have a way of sorting themselves out.
