The Toronto Blue Jays received outstanding production from their catching tandem in 2025, as Alejandro Kirk and Tyler Heineman both delivered strong seasons.

The big question heading into 2026 is whether that success can be sustained.
If the Toronto Blue Jays are serious about challenging for another American League East crown in 2026, Alejandro Kirk will once again need to anchor the position the way he did a year ago.
Kirk’s value begins with his defense. In 2025, he ranked in the 100th percentile in blocks above average and the 98th percentile in pitch framing.
It was yet another season that reinforced his reputation as one of the game’s premier defensive catchers.
He has now posted at least 10 Fielding Run Value in four consecutive seasons, a testament to his consistency behind the plate.
Few catchers manage a pitching staff or control the running game as effectively as Kirk.
At the plate, Kirk enjoyed one of the best offensive seasons of his career in 2025. He set personal bests in home runs (15) and RBIs (76) while striking out just 11.7% of the time.
His improved power was no accident, as he made harder contact than ever before.
Kirk finished the season with a career-high 50.8% hard-hit rate, and his batted-ball profile showed clear signs of adjustment.

His fly-ball rate jumped to 37.2%, the highest of his career in a full season, while his soft-contact rate dropped to its lowest point.
Generating more airborne contact with authority while cutting down on weak ground balls is a reliable recipe for increased production, and Kirk executed it perfectly.
His average exit velocity climbed to 72.5 mph, a notable jump from 70.1 mph the year prior. At just 27 years old, there’s little reason to expect regression as he enters his prime.
All signs point to Kirk remaining an above-average offensive contributor in 2026.

Kirk, Heineman poised to be the best catching tandem in the American League for 2026

When paired with one of the American League’s best backup catchers in Tyler Heineman, the Blue Jays appear well-positioned at the position.
Heineman’s path to Toronto has been anything but straightforward.
He initially signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays in 2022, appeared in a handful of games, and was then designated for assignment before being claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The following year, Toronto reacquired him via trade, only for him to be claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox at the end of the 2023 season.
In September of 2024, the Blue Jays claimed Heineman once again. He appeared in 13 plate appearances during the closing stretch of a disappointing season and entered 2025 as Toronto’s backup catcher.
Given consistent playing time, Heineman exceeded all expectations. He slashed .289/.361/.416 with three home runs across 174 plate appearances, good for a 120 wRC+.
Any offensive production at that level from a backup catcher was a welcome bonus.

His true impact, however, came on defense. In just 424.2 innings behind the plate, Heineman recorded 10 Defensive Runs Saved and 7 Fielding Run Value.
Among catchers with at least 400 innings, his DRS ranked tied for fourth, while his FRV tied for ninth—impressive numbers given his limited workload.
For Toronto, the bar for Heineman in 2026 is simple: provide steady, reliable defense when Kirk needs a breather.
Replicating his offensive output from 2025 is unlikely, especially at age 34, but it isn’t a requirement.
As the Blue Jays look to rebound from a heartbreaking Game 7 loss and make another push toward the World Series, the stability and depth provided by Kirk and Heineman could once again play a crucial role in 2026.
