The Toronto Blue Jays have imposed some interesting stipulations on Yariel Rodriguez's participation in the WBC.

Spanish MLB insider Francys Romero announced on Thursday that the Toronto Blue Jays have given permission to Yariel Rodriguez to play for Team Cuba in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Cuban Baseball Digest doubled down on that report, though his participation will come with specific restrictions.
☑️🇨🇺 Toronto's permission for Yariel Rodriguez for the WBC is for the Cuban to pitch in relief includes the requirement that the Camagüey native always come from the bullpen and cannot exceed two innings per game.

👉🏻 Toronto will be evaluating the right-hander in this relief role during Spring Training and the World Baseball Classic. Considering his 2025 season, this is a very familiar role for him, one that his organization is requiring for the upcoming season.

From struggling starter, to streaky reliever, what are the Blue Jays options with Rodriguez?

Rodriguez signed a five-year, $30 million contract with the Blue Jays prior to the 2024 season.
While he struggled during that year while working as a starter, he rebounded in 2025 after transitioning to the bullpen.
In 66 appearances, Rodriguez posted a 3-2 record with a 3.08 ERA, striking out 66 batters across 73 innings.
Yariel Rodriguez just struck out the side and ended it by doing this to Luis Arráez... only the fourth time Arráez has struck out this season. The best inning of Rodriguez's MLB career. #BlueJays
Despite being included on the postseason roster for the American League Division Series and ALCS, Rodriguez was removed ahead of the World Series.
Following offseason additions that included Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, Toronto outrighted Rodriguez off the 40-man roster in December.
The subsequent signing of Tyler Rogers has only further complicated his standing within the organization.
Given that Rodriguez is no longer on the 40-man roster, it appears the Blue Jays do not have an immediate role planned for him.
That said, several outcomes remain possible. Toronto could re-add him to the roster if injuries arise during spring training, explore a trade, release him outright, or keep him in the minor leagues as depth with the option of reinstating him later in the 2026 season.

Why the Blue Jays placed stipulations on Rodriguez's participation raises questions

While teams generally prioritize player health during the World Baseball Classic, Toronto's decision to impose strict limits on Rodriguez's usage raises questions.
Are the Blue Jays considering giving him a legitimate opportunity to make the Opening Day roster?
Or are they attempting to preserve his health in anticipation of a potential trade?
There is also the matter of why Rodriguez has been barred from starting games for Cuba.
The restrictions may be tied to his preparation as a reliever in camp, with the team wary of exposing him to higher pitch counts.
Alternatively, the Blue Jays may prefer not to showcase his ability as a starter, either to limit injury risk or to control his perceived value around the league.
How the situation unfolds should become clearer once the Blue Jays report to spring training in approximately two and a half weeks.
Rodriguez is the third confirmed Blue Jays player set to participate in the World Baseball Classic, joining Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk.
Additionally, Kazuma Okamoto is expected to represent Japan.
