«It's insane,» the 22-year-old from Boyertown, Pa. said in the Jays dugout at the Rogers Centre before Sunday's 11-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. «I've always dreamed about this and it's finally come true.»
Two-time All-Star Shane Bieber had some advice for Yesavage ahead of his Blue Jays MLB debut
Cy young award winner Shane Bieber was asked by reporters what advice he had for Yesavage in his MLB debut, to which he replied:
"Just be yourself throe strikes get ahead, enjoy it. It's a special thing and nobody can take that away from you becoming a big league baseball player. I was talking to him this morning, post outing he seems comfortable and ready to go, so I'm excited to watch him and his family."
Meanwhile, Yesavage can help the Blue Jays win. He's struck out 160 batters in 98 innings, an obscene number.
Yes, he'll need to keep the ball in the zone and avoid stumbling in his first start at a new level, which has been a theme, but the talent is there for Yesavage to dominate veteran MLB hitters the moment he steps on a mound.
Trey Yesavage was impressive at all four minor-league levels, and now he's set to make his first MLB start 🤩
The Blue Jays 2024 1st round pick, Yesavage has had a quick rise through the minor leagues and up prospect rankings
Yesavage owns a 3.12 ERA, 2.53 FIP, 14.69 K/9 and 3.77 BB/9 between 25 G (98 IP) between A-AAA this season
Big time upside especially in points leagues, and while he could be on an innings limit worth an add in most formats and has #2 upside or better long term
All of these statistics and attributes can crack the foundations of even the surest things, but the answers to all of these questions are why the Blue Jays feel so emboldened to push Yesavage. They think he has the heart of a big-leaguer, not just the arm.
«This isn't an open tryout. This is a very, very deliberate decision that we think he can help us,» John Schneider said. «I don't want to experiment too much and I don't want to ruffle any feathers more than we already have. We'll make the best decision to try to win.»
