The move hardly comes as a surprise though the timing was a bit unusual. Lucas was also the only player involved in this latest roster transaction.
Lucas, who pitched in games for the Blue Jays in 2024, has been employed as a starter this Spring. While the results have been mixed, the Toronto Blue Jays have liked his transition well enough that he will continue to be stretched out in Triple-A.
Lucas made three starts in four appearances this Spring for the Toronto Blue Jays, compiling an 0-1 record with seven strikeouts in 8.1 innings.
Lucas has 18.1 career innings at the major league level, though he has never started a game in the big leagues. While the results haven't been there for him, if he can find success as a starter he could find himself being a valuable left-handed option for many big league rotations.
In Triple-A, he looks to be the number two or three starter behind Bloss and fellow lefty Eric Lauer, and ahead of Kloffenstein and possibly Andrew Bash. Macko will join once healthy and then later in the year Buffalo will see rehab starts from Alek Manoah and Ricky Tiedemann.
As he is already on the 40-man roster, Lucas could see himself in the big leagues again sooner rather than later. At the same time, he could spend the entire year in the minors as the Toronto Blue Jayslook to further his development as a starter.
