Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is now open to playing for the New York Yankees Whether it's because of their amended facial hair policy, or a more mature understanding of the business side of the game, we'll never know. But it remains a possibility.
It wasn't always this way though. In an interview with the New York Post's Jon Heyman last month, Guerrero admitted that he grew up hating the Yankees. He would frequent the ballpark whenever his father was a visiting player, and while many had kids roaming around, someone from the Yankees told junior that he had to leave.
"When I was a child with my dad, and like all (players') kids I was in front of the dugout, and somebody from the Yankees told my dad that 'You gotta take your kid (inside). You can't be on the field. I felt bad. And it stood with me.»
Evidently, that stuck with Guerrero for many years. However, he seems to have softened his stance in more recent times.
The Yankees will most definitely be in play for Vladdy this offseason, and it makes sense that way would pursue him. While they currently have Paul Goldschmidt the position, he only signed a one-year deal and will be 38 by season's end. It's logical that the Yankees would look for someone more long-term.
Still, Guerrero has openly said that he wants to remain with the Blue Jays, who are reportedly set to make him a new offer. He also acknowledges however, that they will now have to compete with all 29 other teams for his services.
In spite of all the drama and distraction surrounding Guerrero's negotiations, many feel he will end up back in a Blue Jays uniform for next season and beyond.
