Divisional play in Major League Baseball began in 1969, when each league went from one division to two. Even then, it took 31 years for a team who finished last one year go on to finish first the following year. And it happened twice.
THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS FROM *WORST* TO !FIRST!*
This rare occurence only happening 13 - thirteen times in divisional era's.
Toronto hasn't won the division since 2015
and hasn't clinched it at home since 1992,
when the Blue Jays went on to win the first of consecutive
World Series titles - the only ones in franchise history.
«Baseball's funny, man," Jays Manager John Schneider said.
While prior to the Blue Jays, the most recent team to go from worst to first was the 2016
Boston Red Sox. That season they won 93 games, best both the Jays and the
Baltimore Orioles.
But it was 1991 when it happened for the very first time.
In 1990, both the
Atlanta Braves and
Minnesota Twins finished last in their respective divisions. The following year, 1991, they sat atop and went on to meet in what has been called the greatest World Series of all time.
Blue Jays win 20 more games than previous season to join elusive club.
The fact the Blue Jays are even here is nothing short of remarkable. While they won the division thanks to holding the tiebreaker over the
New York Yankees, their offensive also rebounded, hitting a league best .265.
Not only that, but many analysts are saying that Toronto has a real shot.
The last team to go from last place to winning the World Series? The 2013 Boston Red Sox, led by former Blue Jays manager John Farrell.
Now, the Blue Jays have a chance at adding their name to that most exclusive club.
