The San Diego Padres announced that Luis Arraez will be placed on the concussion IL following a scary collision at first base in Sunday afternoon's game against the Houston Astros.
After Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the game with a lead-off homerun, Arraez attempted to bunt his way on. Astros first baseman Christian Walker ran to field the ball, while second baseman Mauricio Dubon covered the bag. As he received the ball, his chin appeared to have collided with Arraez, who went down hard.
Despite being placed on the concussion IL, manager Mike Shildt is optimistic for Arraez' long-term future.
Best-case scenario with Luis. Obviously, very scary. We think he's for the most part out of the woods. Time will tell, but the initial testing is very favorable. No fractures of any sort. A little bit of laceration on his jawline, so we're worried about his jaw, clearly his cervical region.
Arraez has won three consecutive batting titles - with three different teams - and is a lightning rod atop the Padres lineup. He is a 3X All-Star.
Prior to Sunday's game, Arraez was batting .287, with a .338 clip over the last 17 games. The Padres, who are already without Jackson Merrill, Jake Cronenworth, Brandon Lockridge and Jason Heyward, need Arraez back as quickly as possible.
The Padres first baseman was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital after being carted off the field, but had returned to the dugout by the end of the game and was seen chatting with teammates. He did not speak to the media.
Tatis, for one, is just happy his teammate is okay.
«Just happy he's back with us already and just happy he's standing up. It's just a sad part of the game, but stuff happens sometimes. I'm just happy he's all right.»
