The Toronto Blue Jays have released shortstop Michael Turconi. The 25-year old was the victim of a roster crunch after a slow start to the season at Triple-A Buffalo.

Through 12 games with the Bisons this year, Turconi slashed .130/.250/.174.
Drafted out of college, Turconi was a 15th round selection by the Blue Jays back in 2022. He rose the minor leagues at a steady pace, splitting 2022 between Dunedin and Vancouver, 2023 between Vancouver and New Hampshire, and 2024 between New Hampshire and Buffalo.
While he had some success at the lower levels, his production didn't show enough of an increase to warrant him being kept on the roster. That, combined with the demotions of Will Wagner, Davis Schneider, and Alan Roden, and Turconi found himself squeezed out of job.
His best stretch came with Vancouver in 2023. In 74 games with the Canadians, Turconi slashed .299/.418/.486 with 18 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 41 RBIs. However, he experienced a sharp drop-off in production upon his promotion to Double-A.
While he had a slight uptick in numbers to begin 2024, he regressed again when he moved up to Buffalo. After the offseason, he couldn't get quite it together, which ultimately led to his release.
Now, Turconi is free to sign with any team, though any prospective deal would likely be a minor league one as Turconi is yet to make his major league debut.
It's an unfortunate development for a prospect that had potential. His release says less about him and is simply a numbers game.
Hopefully, he lands on his feet soon enough.
