It was six days before his birthday.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sandy Alomar Sr.
Born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, the elder Alomar played for six teams over the course of a 15 year career and was an All-Star in 1970 with the-then California Angels.
Much like his Hall of Fame son,
Blue Jays legend-turned-baseball-pariah
Roberto Alomar, Alomar played second base, and was a light-hitting, glove-first type of player.
While he only hit 13 career home runs, he did swipe 229 bases.
Coached both his sons at the major league level
Once his playing career finished, he found new life as a coach. He managed several years in the minor leagues as well as the Puerto Rican Winter League, where he managed Roberto, and several other winter league teams where he also managed older son
Sandy. He was also manager of the Puerto Rican National Team.
He spent parts of 16 seasons coaching in the big leagues, and was briefly Sandy Jr.'s coach during their time with the New York Mets.
In addition to managing both his sons in Puerto Rico, he coached both Robbie and Sandy Jr in the early years of their career when they were all members of the San Diego Padres, where he was third base coach.
Blue Jays Central sends its condolences to the Alomar family.
