Clint Hurdle is returning to a major baseball field. The former outfielder and longtime manager with the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates, is re-joining the Rockies as their new hitting coach after the dismissal of Hensley Meulens.
While a coaching change so early in the season is not unheard of, it is quite rare. However with a league-worst 3-15 record, their team-wide batting line of .220/.285/.344 translates to a 65 wRC+, also worst in the majors.
Hurdle was previously the Rockies hitting coach from 1997 until being named manager partway through the 2002 season. He served in that capacity until 2009, being fired midway through the season. He spent the rest of the year as an analyst for MLB network before being hired by the
Rangers for the 2010 season.
After a lone season in Texas, he was hired to manage the Pirates, winning NL Manager of the Year honours in 2013 before his firing with three games left in the 2019 season. He subsequently retired from managing that November. In 2021, he re-joined the Rockies as a special assistant.
The Rockies are currently managed by
Bud Black, who is in his ninth season with the club. While their is no indication that the front office is looking to replace Black with Hurdle, it is not entirely out of the question.
For his career, Hurdle a managerial record of 1,187-1,371-1 for a total winning percentage of .485.
